I remember coming across the “find the others” meme when I was younger. It seemed to be making its rounds on the web at the time, circa 2010.
This notion of finding the others left an impression on me.
It struck me as a rallying cry for misfits and malcontents everywhere. Where did this message come from, and what exactly did it mean? Then, in a recorded lecture I heard those words escape from Terence Mckenna’s mouth, and I finally discovered the idea originated from psychedelic flagbearer Timothy Leary.
Over time the message has evolved in my heart, expanding to include a deeper meaning: community.
Before I stepped into my new life as a rusticator I knew I would need to find the others. The ones I could relate to, who could relate to me. So I travelled far and wide.
I stayed at hostels, and I woofed on farms and homesteads as far as Australia.
I wanted to know another way of life.
Still today I am in search of The Others, some of which I am proud to call my neighbours and friends. And although I am no longer in contact with some folks I met who shook me to my core and inspired me, I hold them close to my chest and fond in my memory.
If you’re serious about rustication, about homesteading and an escape from the ongoing decay of modern civilization and its terminal societies, you must find the others!
